King of Champions Promotions presents: APOCALYPSE 2009 Facing off against a downturned economy and free fights being seen on Spike TV, Colorado fight fans once again showed their desire to support local fighters by filling the Crown Event Center Plaza to standing room only capacity. There were two titles, one women's MMA bout and two professional fights on tap. As in the last KOC show, great match making made for a night of fun action for all in attendance. The fights were able to be seen, but unfortunately not heard (due to technical difficulties) on GoFightLive.TV In the main event Ian Stonehouse battled for three rounds in the professional division to determine the KOC lightweight champion. The fighters clinched early and spent a good portion of the first round in this position with each landing strong knees, Johnson fighting for a takedown and Stonehouse defending. Round two started with Stonehouse landing a strong head kick, but Johnson showed his toughness and pressed forward to get the double leg takedown then trying to get a Darce choke. Stonehouse escaped, scrambled back to standing and Johnson ended the round by getting a second takedown. Round three Had Johnson scoring with a scoop slam and trying for several submission attempts including a Peruvian neck-tie and an armbar that Stonehouse defended. Johnson punctuated the round with strong GNP. In the end the score cards had it in favor of Johnson by way of unanimous decision. James Meade faced Pete Vandervort in a professional MMA bout. Vandervort landed a strong head kick to start the fight and on the ground he worked his GNP attack. Meade was able to score a reversal and fight off several submission attempts before getting his own GNP game going. From there he was able to garner the TKO win when the referee stopped the bout declaring Meade the winner at 4:34 of round one. Derek Moralez faced Troy Burron for the KOC amateur welterweight title. Moralez got the fight started with a big slam off of a bodylock. Burron tried to set in a guillotine choke, but Moralez took advantage of the moment to score with a scoop slam. Both fighters scrambled to their feet and in the midst of each throwing a strong flurry Moralez landed a right hook that dropped Burron. He followed it up with quick GNP before the referee stopped the bout giving Moralez the win and the title by TKO at :59 of round one. Jesse Henley fought Josh Huber. Round one saw Henley in dominant position for most of the round with Huber defending well off of his back. Round two had Henley scoring with takedowns and Huber working his way back to standing several times. Off of a clinch Henley set in a head and arm triangle choke while standing, then he pulled Huber to the mat and at 2:50 of round two Henley got the choke closed off for the submission win. Dan Craft faced Masson Hoffman. Craft almost immediately staggered Hoffman with punches and after following him to the ground he worked his GNP until Hoffman tapped out and Craft got the win at 1:49 of round one. Travis Hollis faced Micky Koonce. Round one had good ground and standing action with Hollis controlling the latter part of the round. Round two had each striking well as well as back and forth grappling action. On the mat Koonce was able to get top position and from there he worked his GNP attrack to get the TKO win at 2:25 of round two. Kelly Brown faced Audrey Perkins in a women's MMA bout. Round one was all standing action with Perkins landing the majority of the damaging strikes. Round two saw Perkins begin strong but Brown got a takedown and tried for a guillotine choke. Perkins defended the choke and worked GNP until the round ended. Round three again saw Perkins landing good strikes, but off of a Thai clinch Brown sunk in a tight standing guillotine choke. Perkins defended the choke and from the clinched position while being choked she landed lots of strong knee strikes to close out the round. When the judges gave their scores it was a unanimous decision win for Perkins. Anthony Chavez faced Alan Lobato. Round one started with good striking from each as well as excellent ground action. After both fighters scrambled to standing Chavez missed with a punch, and as he spun around Lobato set in a standing RNC, pulled Chavez to the mat and from there Lobato was able to close off the choke for the win at 2:52 of round one. Miguel Martinez faced Zachary Chavez. Round one had back and forth action with Wagner getting a takedown and working submission attempts while Martinez worked GNP. Round two had Wagner trying for a takedown most of the round which Martinez defended. When it did go to the mat on Martinez' terms he scored well with his GNP. Wagner was unable to answer the bell to start the third round so the TKO win at 3:00 of round two was awarded to Martinez. Tony Gonzalez faced Geoff Brokx. Brokx got an early takedown but Gonzalez was able to sweep him. Off of his back Brokx tried for an armbar that Gonzalez worked to get out of by way of two slams. Brokx however held tight and got the submission victory early in round one (no time was announced). "Of The Night" moments: Chin of the night goes to Kelly Brown for her display of toughness and never backing down in the face of great striking from her opponent. Submission(s) of the night go to Alan Lobato and Jesse Henley. Both fighters won their bouts with chokes that they initiated while standing, then transitioning to the ground, keeping on the choke and getting their submission victories. Lobato's choke was an RNC and Henley won with a head and arm triangle choke. Ground and Pound of the night goes to Dan Craft for his strong GNP attack to get the TKO win. Slam(s) of the night and KO of the night both go to Derek Moralez. His bodylock slam and scoop slam made his opponent wary of clinching. This allowed Moralez to showcase his striking by way of ending his bout with a right hook that took his opponent out of the fight. Fight of the night goes to Rocky Johnson and Ian Stonehouse. Each fighter had a huge contingent of fans and each gave their cheering sections multiple opportunities to voice their excitement. Good striking, strong takedowns, technical ground work and toughness displayed by both fighters made this main event and title bout everything a promoter hopes for when putting together a fight. Thanks as always to all of the event sponsors. Be sure to check the site calendar for upcoming events. Best in Health and Training, J. R. Gordon.
